Gold vs Platinum Wedding Rings: Which Is Right For You?

Choosing your wedding ring is a deeply personal decision. Worn every day, for a lifetime, it must balance beauty, comfort, and durability, whilst reflecting your personal style.

One of the most common questions we’re asked at Brufords when couples are choosing their wedding rings is, “Should we choose gold or platinum?”

In this guide, we’ll help you understand the differences between these two precious metals, so you can make a confident and informed choice.

Appearance & Colour

Gold wedding rings come in three colour variations, and the colour you see is created by alloying pure gold with other metals, giving you flexibility in tone and style.

• Yellow Gold – Classic, warm, and timeless
• White Gold – Bright and modern (usually also rhodium-plated to keep it bright white).
• Rose Gold – Romantic with a soft pink hue

Naturally white/cool grey in colour, platinum has a subtle, understated look rather than a bright shine, with many people describing it as quietly luxurious.

Durability & Everyday Wear

Gold is a very durable metal, especially when alloyed for wedding rings, but it does however wear away gradually over many years, especially on thinner bands. With that being said, gold rings are easier to polish and refurbish, simple to resize and repair, and still very suitable for everyday wear.

Platinum is also incredibly durable and dense, but doesn’t wear away in the same way as gold – instead, it develops a soft “patina” over time, which many people love for its lived-in, romantic feel. Scratches tend to move the metal, rather than remove it, making platinum and excellent choice if you have an active lifestyle, want maximum longevity, and prefer low maintenance wear.

Weight & Feel

This is something which many couples don’t consider until they try rings on, and is purely about personal preference.

Gold is lighter and often feels more comfortable for those who aren’t used to wearing jewellery, whereas platinum feels noticeably heavier on the finger due to its density.

Maintenance & Care

With the yellow and rose varieties of gold, no plating is needed and although they show scratches more easily, they can often be polished out beautifully. White gold will need re-plating every few years to maintain its bright white colour, but it is often easy and relatively inexpensive to refresh.

As it develops a patina over time, rather than losing metal, platinum does not need to be replaced, but can also be polished if you prefer a high shine. If you like the idea of a ring that evolves naturally over time, platinum may appeal to you. If you prefer the option of restoring your ring to “like new”, gold offers that flexibility.

Allergies & Skin Sensitivity

Platinum is naturally hypoallergenic, making it an excellent choice for those with sensitive skin.

Gold alloys can sometimes cause reactions depending on the metals used (particularly in lower carat gold), however high-quality alloys can minimise this risk.

Price & Value

Gold offers a wide range of price points depending on the carat (9ct vs 18ct), colour (yellow, white, or rose), and ring design.

Historically, platinum has typically been more expensive that gold due to its rarity, density, and the skill required to work with it. However in more recent times, gold has dramatically increased in price, narrowing the gap and, in some cases, surpassing platinum depending on market conditions.
