The 4 C's of Diamonds: A Beginner's Guide

At Brufords, we understand that buying a diamond can feel daunting, with certificates, grades, and unfamiliar terms to understand. But the truth is, diamonds are evaluated using a universal standard called The 4 C's: Cut, Colour, Clarity, and Carat.

These four qualities work together to shape diamond's beauty, rarity, and value, and once you understand them, you can choose a diamond with confidence.

Cut

Many people confuse "cut" with shape (round, oval, princess, pear), but instead, cut relates to the arrangement of angles, proportions, and tiny facets that determine how light enters, reflects, and returns to your eyes.

A perfectly cut diamond will have three types of sparkle: Brilliance (white light), Fire (rainbow flashes), and Scintillation (the sparkle you see when it moves). When a cut is too shallow or too deep, light leaks out instead of bouncing back, and can make the stone look dull.

Diamond certificates usually grade a cut as Excellent (or ideal), Very Good, Good, Fair, or Poor. If you're looking for a diamond that truly sparkles, prioritise Excellent or Very Good, as even a smaller diamond with a great cut can outshine a larger one with a poor cut.

Colour

Did you know that "colour" in diamonds actually refers to the lack of it?

With the colour grading scale running from D (colourless) to Z (noticeably yellow), true colourless diamonds are rare and command premium prices.

A diamond's colour can also affect it's appearance: D-F (icy white, crisp sparkle), G-J (slight warmth detectable to only trained eyes), K-M (noticeable warmth, often used in vintage-inspired designs).

Clarity

"Clarity" measures how free a diamond is from natural features called inclusions (inside the stone) and blemishes (on the surface). These marks are formed deep within the earth, making each diamond unique.

Whilst the grading scale runs from Flawless (no imperfections visible under 10x magnification) to Included (imperfections visible to the naked eye), many inclusions are so small that they can only be seen under magnification and do not affect beauty. This means that you can often choose a diamond in the VS2 to SI1 range - which is "eye-clean" - and still have a stone that looks flawless without paying for top grades.

Carat

A diamond's "carat" refers to its weight, with one carat equal to 0.2 grams, and while it's easy to assume a bigger carat means a bigger diamond, "cut" also plays a big role in how large the stone appears. Two diamonds of the same weight can look noticeably different in size if one has been cut deeper or shallower.

It's also worth bearing in mind that elongated shapes such as oval, pear, or marquise, often look larger than round diamonds of the same weight because of their spread.
